Gerbil toys.

Gerbils are nocturnal animals and are active at night, sleep during the day.

You can buy them toys such as a wodent wheel, or toilet rolls for them to play and chew, a coconut shell for them to hide.

Gerbils need a nest box to feel secure; they will hide out in it and use if for sleeping. A sturdy wood or ceramic nest box is preferable to plastic since the plastic will quickly be destroyed by chewing. The wood will likely get chewed to but tends to last a little longer. Clay flower pots are another possible choice.

Gerbil Life span.

As a fact, gerbils can live 2 to 4 years on average. They can live up to 4 years if properly kept.
Size: body about 4 inches long, tail another 4 inches.

Gerbil Feeding.

Food should be given daily to gerbils. Find food that have variety of mixture , not mostly sunflower seeds as they are high in fat.You can also buy pellets or Lab Blocks for them which are nutritionally balanced. For variety of diet, you can add fresh vegetables and fruits such as apples, carrots every once a month to avoid diarrhea. Also oats and timothy hays.

Must make sure that they have water. You can buy the water feeder from pets shops.

Gerbil housing.

In my experience, gerbils are best kept in aquarium tanks than Habitrails, Wire or plastic cages. They tend to chew things most of the time and they will chew away the plastic cages you have for them . For wire cages, they will kicks the bedding out and make a mess!

A 10 gallon tank will do for two gerbils. Its enough for them to run around and play. You can also opt for bigger size if you are keeping more than two or if you plan to breed them.

A secure lid for the tank is very important cos gerbils are great jumper and you do not want them to run away.

Gerbils are less smelly than hamsters, cleaning their cages every 14 days will do.

For the bedding, you can use corn cobs, Living world fresh and comfy bedding,
as pine causes allergies. Fluffy cotton wool are best to be avoided.

Gerbils are not solitary animals and are used to live in large groups. It is best to keep 2 or more . If you dont plan to breed them, you can get same sex gerbils to keep each other company.

It takes time for a gerbil to get to know a new comer so it is wise to slowly introduce them to each other before you actually put them in the same cage. There have been incidents where they fight each other and once wounded, the gerbil will eventually die.

5 tiny babies!

Our argente cream gerbil gave birth to 5 babies last night. No wonder these few days she looked extra large compare to her normal size. Her babies are smaller than the last ones that she had. Her last two babies were bigger than these litter.

This is her 3rd pregnancy , her first two were stillborn. So sad :{ they weren't moving when she delivered them, maybe she delivered them too long or is it because its her first pregnancy. But the good thing is her following pregnancies were all a success. Yay!
